Transformation Through Suffering

1930 UK time Saturday 6th June 2020

With Steve Taylor

Event link:

Steve will explore the powerful connection between spiritual transformation and psychological turmoil. He will describe some of his research into ‘post-traumatic transformation,’ in situations such as bereavement, serious illness, addiction, imprisonment and intense stress and loss. He will explain the reasons why suffering can bring about spiritual awakening, and why some people are more open to transformation than others. Finally, he will suggest that there is an evolutionary aspect of the phenomenon, There appears to be a ‘latent higher self’ which is ready to emerge in many people, and which may be ready to emerge in our species as a whole, leading to a new phase in the evolution of consciousness.

Steve Taylor PhD is the author of several best-selling books on psychology and spirituality and is a senior lecturer in psychology at Leeds Beckett University. He is the current chair of the Transpersonal Psychology Section of the British Psychological Society. His books include Waking From Sleep, The Fall, Out of the Darkness, Back to Sanity, The Calm Center and The Leap: The Psychology of Spiritual Awakening. His books have been published in 20 languages, and Eckhart Tolle has described his work as ‘an important contribution to the shift in consciousness which is happening on our planet at present.’ He writes the popular blog ‘Out of the Darkness’ for Psychology Today magazine.

Participants are encouraged to develop a positive awareness of cross-cultural understandings of the human body and its core experiences (which may include altered states of consciousness). The seminars raise awareness of beliefs which may influence our access to health care. The text book ‘Cultural Perspectives on Mental Wellbeing’ can be bought to accompany this module.
