Many people are told by Western Medical professionals there is only one mono-cultural perspective for understanding mental health and wellbeing. This is called the Western Medical model. This can mean administering psychiatric medication to treat a chemical imbalance in the brain, and having short-term CBT sessions for symptom relief of emotional disorders, for example depression and anxiety. On the other hand, there are many different cultural perspectives on mental health and wellbeing that may challenge how we understand and interpret mental health and wellbeing in the Western world. The following presentation and discussion involved examining cultural diversity and difference in relation to interpretations of mental health and wellbeing.
